PRESS RELEASE SANTA CLARA, CA - A new web site has been launched to refocus attention on returning intercollegiate football to Santa Clara University. The web site titled, Let Them Play.com (http://www.letthemplay.com) contains both an historical archive of the school's football legacy as well as a series of articles discussing the nearly 10-year absence of football from the Mission Campus. Football was dropped by Santa Clara in February, 1993, with the school's administration citing a shortfall in the university budget as a primary basis for its action. In the intervening years, Santa Clara has increased its fundraising significantly, now numbering among the top 125 schools in the nation in annual giving. It is also one of only four Division I schools in that group which does not field a football team. Santa Clara administrators have, in the past, reacted negatively to suggestions that football be reinstated at the university; once claiming that even a $100 million gift to the school would not be enough for it to reconsider its position on football. The new web site will also serve as an online community for Santa Clara's football alumni. To further this discussion the web site contains, among other articles, a posting of a study of the SCU football alumni community which found that 50 percent had gone on to graduate studies, and an equal number were currently involved in parish and community service programs as volunteers.
